Sugarbowl-Grizzly Den Provincial Park and Protected Area is located on the traditional territory of the Lheidli T’enneh. The park boundary begins about 100 km east of Prince George. The trailheads to the cabins are located down the Hungary Creek Forest Service Road which is seldom maintained and not plowed in winter.

The trail systems are maintained collaboratively by BC Parks, the PGBRS and the Caledonia Ramblers. The Ramblers are a member club of the PGBRS.

Why cabin fees?

The PGBRS manages cabin reservations in the park and we use the funds collaboratively with BC Parks to improve our local remote access Provincial Parks. 100% of the funds are used directly for projects and there is absolutely no personal compensation for PGBRS volunteers or BC Parks staff from these collections. These funds are used to, for example:

  • Re-supply firewood by helicopter
  • Make improvements to the cabins, leverage grants for large projects
  • Build structures: Wood sheds, etc.
  • Improve trails and crossings
  • Improve safety
  • Improve signage
  • Improve access

Getting there

  • Drive 90 km east of Prince George on Highway 16
  • Turn right on the Hungary Creek Forest Service Road (FSR)
  • The 8-mile/Grizzly Den trailhead is at ~13 km
  • The Raven Lake trailhead is at ~16 km
  • Hungary Creek FSR is not actively maintained
  • Reasonable clearance all wheel drive vehicle recommended during the summer
  • The FSR is NOT PLOWED in winter
  • Typical snow-free road conditions are mid-June to mid-October
  • No refunds for road conditions

Cabin information

Raven Lake Cabin

The Raven Lake cabin was completely rebuilt in 2019. The original cabin was built in 1974 by Northwood Pulp and Timber Ltd. The cabin is equiped with firewood, an axe, a wood stove and an outhouse. The new two-story cabin has a few extra features as well: drying racks, secure food caches, bunks and foamies.

What to expect: The cabin has a very powerful wood stove, plenty of wood, 10 sleeping mattresses, an outhouse, and a few cabin tools. You should plan just like a normal backcountry camping trip. You need to filter/treat/boil water, have a sleeping bag, bring everything you need to cook (including a stove), be prepared for navigation and wilderness emergencies, etc. The cabin is unlocked. The cabin has no cell service.

Water: Plenty of water from Raven Lake and the outflow creek in all seasons. Water must be filtered, treated or boiled.

Winter access (mid-October to mid-June): The 16 km forest service road is not plowed. Typical snow-free road conditions are mid-June to mid-October. In the winter, you can ski, snowshoe or snowmobile the road until the trailhead where only non-motorized activities are allowed.
